Anonymous said: I try to say the traditional tribal names as much as I can. But where does the name <Sioux> come from?

lastrealindians:

It’s derived from the French word for ‘enemy.’ Its the opposite of who we are. Our real name is Oceti Sakowin, Seven Council Fires. Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota belong to this group and those words all mean ‘friend.’ Unfortunately the word Sioux is pretty well engrained in western society and sometimes we’re still forced to use it so people will know what we’re talking about, i.e. they call us The Great Sioux Nation.

Bomba is an Afro-Puerto Rican folkloric music style developed throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries by west African slaves brought to the island by the Spanish. It is a communal activity that still thrives in its traditional centers of Loíza, Santurce, Mayagüez, Ponce, and New York City. The traditional musical style has been diffused throughout the United States following the Puerto Rican Diaspora, especially in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, California, and Florida. It also became increasingly popular in Peru, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil, and has largely influenced Afro-Latino music styles within these countries.

More than just a genre of music, it’s most defining characteristic is the encounter and creative relationship between dancers, percussionists, and singers. Dance is an integral part of the music. It is popularly described as a challenge/connection, or an art of “call and answer,” in which two or more drums follow the rhythms and moves of the dancers. The challenge requires great physical shape and usually continues until either the drummer or the dancer discontinues.

There are several styles of bomba, and the popularity of these styles varies by region. There are three basic rhythms, as well as many others that are mainly variations of these: Yubá, Sicá and Holandés. Other styles include Cuembé, Bámbula, Cocobalé, and Hoyomula.

Raquel Ervin aka Rocket
Powers/abilities: She wears an inertia belt gifted by Icon that allows her to manipulate kinetic energy. For example, she is able to make force fields & fly.

Quick 'bio':
Raquel Ervin is a 15 year old aspiring writer. She meets Augustus Freeman when she & a group of “friends” try to rob his home. After seeing that he is not the average human (or human at all), Raquel persuades him to become a superhero to set an example for the people in their community & take her on as a sidekick. Soon he becomes Icon & she his sidekick Rocket (she came up with the names herself). Very early into her superhero gig, Raquel finds out she’s pregnant & decides to keep the baby despite all the hardships she’ll have to face.

To find out more about Raquel, check out the Icon series. While she is the sidekick, the series is mostly about her life as a teenage superhero & mom-to-be.

It's official: Gay panic/trans panic defenses banned in California

gaywrites:

This weekend, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation that prohibits “gay panic” and “trans panic” defenses from being used to escape murder charges.

All over the country, murder charges can sometimes be downgraded to manslaughter when a person claims they acted out of panic after finding out a person was gay or trans. (It’s especially common around the murders of trans women.) It perpetuates the idea that LGBT people are “lying” about who they are if they aren’t out to everyone, it attempts to justify murder, and it says that LGBT lives aren’t as important as others.

The American Bar Association has urged governments to end panic defenses, but with this legislation, California becomes the first state ever to outlaw them.

Current state law allows murder charges to be reduced to manslaughter if the killings happened in a sudden quarrel or in the heat of passion.

But under the bill, approved by the Assembly last month, defendants would be barred from using their victims’ sexual orientation or gender identity to support such a defense.

Read that again: California is the first state ever to say that a victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity is no excuse for murdering them. The first state ever. Wow, have we got a ton of work to do.
